homunculi are usually created for a specific purpose. that's a well known fact, though "usually" is the key word. alberio doesn't know what reason they were created for, and their late creator didn't have much of an answer either. "i just wanted to see if i could," they had said. well, that's as good a reason as any, perhaps. it left alberio feeling listless and restless, but luckily the people in the surrounding towns were happy to have an extra helping hand around! especially when it came to map making, as the last member of the cartographers' guild to come by... well, they certainly didn't do a very good job. most of the townsfolk hadn't even seen them come by, and the view of the towns on the maps they were given just kind of showed a lump where the towns should be... and so, alberio, with their uncannily accurate sense of direction, volunteered to sign up for the guild and help out.

alberio has since set out to correct other faults in the readily available maps they've been given, and to see if there's any secrets they can sniff out that others haven't been able to. so far, they've been a great boon in that regard, with many maps having been set to rights, though this has caused a bit of a rift between them and their fellow guildmates. it turns out, many of them don't like being corrected! who knew... but really, if you're going to do a job that the world relies on, you should do it to the best of your abilities. that's what alberio thinks, at least.

along their travels, they've come to realize that they really, really like animals, and animals like them too. they often offer to help out with animal care when they stop by any settlements, and people really appreciate the help! they often give alberio new clothes, tools, sometimes even really tasty food... alberio usually has to turn some of it down, having too much of everything to travel comfortably, but they've also taken to bringing some of their gifts forward, passing them on to people in the next place they stop, becoming a one-person trading caravan of sorts.
